Chemical Peels

The concept of skin peeling has been around for ages, and involves applying a substance to the skin that speeds the exfoliation of skin cells. A chemical peel can help San Diego and Riverside County patients undo some of the visible damage to the skin caused by aging, the environment, and skin conditions such as acne.

The science of chemical peels has improved dramatically in recent years, and at Dermatology Specialists we can treat a wide array of conditions on all skin types with the different chemical peels that we offer. Our estheticians can help with more superficial skin concerns using lighter peels, such as alpha hydroxy acid peels, and our dermatologists perform Jessner and TCA peels for more dramatic results.

Jessner Peels

The Jessner peel is a light to medium-depth peel that combines lactic acid, salicylic acid and resorcinol for improvement in conditions such as acne, sun damage, and pigmentation issues. This formulation penetrates beyond the outer layers of skin, and can:

  • Unclog pores and reduce blackheads
  • Improve the appearance of fine lines
  • Help with skin discoloration

The Jessner peel produces a moderate level of exfoliation, causing your skin to flake and peel for 4 to 7 days after your procedure. Once healing is complete, smoother and younger-looking skin will be revealed.

Melanage Peels

The Melanage Skin Lightening Peel is a superficial chemical peel designed to improve the texture and appearance of the skin. It entails application of a medicated masque and an at-home regimen. This peel is safe and effective for all skin types including dark skin. There is no pain and little-to-no irritation during the application of the masque. Typically, the irritation level on the following 3-4 days is like a sunburn.

The Melanage 1 masque is applied during an office visit where it is compunded freshly to ensure potency and reliability. The masque is removed by the patient after a required length of time depending on the skin type. Patients leave the office with the masque on their face. Patients are responsible for adhering to an easy-to-follow, but strict, at-home regimen involving the applications of several Melanage products following the masque removal. Results may vary.

Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA) Peels

TCA peels are usually performed using a concentration that produces a medium-depth peel. This level of resurfacing can:

  • Reduce the appearance of fine wrinkles
  • Correct pigmentation irregularities
  • Visibly improve overall skin texture

The TCA peel causes a brownish crust to form over the skin, which flakes off in 3 to 7 days. As the new skin is revealed, it may appear pink or reddish for up to a week or more. When we see you after your chemical peel in one of our San Diego or Riverside County offices, we will advise you on which skin care products will help you maintain your renewed skin.
